Gas generator sets: Core equipment for green power in shipping
Gas turbine generator sets are the core power equipment of ships that rely on gas turbines or gas internal combustion engines to drive generators. They consist of a power unit, generator, control and protection system and auxiliary system. With their advantages of high efficiency, environmental protection and flexibility, they have become the preferred power solution in modern shipping and marine engineering. They are widely used in the main power generation and electric propulsion systems of various ships such as LNG ships, cruise ships, engineering ships, and offshore platforms.
Core technologies and performance advantages
• Multi-fuel compatibility: Supports various clean energy sources such as natural gas, associated petroleum gas, biogas, methanol, and liquid ammonia. Mainstream models can freely switch between dual-fuel (such as natural gas-diesel) or pure clean fuel modes to adapt to the energy supply needs of different navigation scenarios.
• High efficiency and energy saving characteristics: Advanced models can achieve a world-class power generation efficiency of 42%, and the combined cycle system thermal efficiency can be increased to 34%-45%. A single two-megawatt unit can generate up to 16 million kWh of electricity per year, significantly reducing operating costs.
• Compact and reliable design: The number of core components is only one-tenth that of a diesel engine. It is small in size, light in weight, and has a compact structure that is easy to arrange on ships. It starts up quickly in cold conditions (small units reach full load in 15 seconds to 2 minutes), with a reliability coefficient of over 95.5%, and is suitable for stable operation in complex marine conditions.
• Environmental advantages: Emissions are far below IMO (International Maritime Organization) standards. Pure ammonia fuel models can achieve near-zero carbon emissions, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions are significantly reduced. Some models are equipped with low-NOx combustion technology or SCR devices, which are in line with the trend of decarbonization in shipping.
Power coverage and application scenarios
• Power range: The product range is comprehensive, with power ranging from 10 kW to 3500 kW, which can meet the diverse needs of emergency power supply for small ships, main propulsion for medium and large ships and continuous power supply for offshore platforms. High-power models have achieved a breakthrough of 25MW.
• Core Applications:
1. Commercial vessels: Main power generation and electric propulsion systems for LNG carriers, cruise ships, ferries, and container ships;
2. Engineering and Marine Engineering: Power supply for engineering vessels, drilling platforms, and offshore wind power maintenance vessels;
3. Special scenarios: emergency power supply, peak-shaving power supply and continuous power supply for ships in remote sea areas; some models can be deployed on vehicles.
